Will AI surpass humans and seize control of the world? Various experts hold different opinions on this matter, and several AI-related predictions have proven incorrect so far. While some assert that Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) will become a reality in the near future, I, trusting their insights, believe AGI will not pose a danger to humanity; it will remain well under human control.
To illustrate my perspective, let\’s consider a simple analogy related to how deep learning models are trained. Simplifying the technical details, the process resembles a reward and punishment system. Successful outcomes are rewarded, while deviations are punished through adjustments to the model\’s weights, similar to a straightforward mathematical system like RELU.
Now, envision an animal trainer scenario. If you\’ve witnessed the renowned Shamu show at Sea World, you\’d observe that the trainer consistently rewards the killer whale with fish after each successfully completed task. Although the whale can perform certain tasks better than a human, such as lifting three people simultaneously or rapidly running a full circle in the pool, it remains under human control.
Similarly, regardless of how advanced AI may become, humans will always retain control over it. Here are some key factors supporting this belief:
Lack of Inherent Motivation: Unlike humans, AI lacks intrinsic desires, motivations, or consciousness. AI systems operate based on programmed algorithms and data, without personal intentions or ambitions.
Dependency on Human Programming: AI systems are created, programmed, and maintained by humans. Their actions and capabilities are confined to the parameters set by their human creators. They lack the ability to autonomously set goals outside their programmed scope.
Human Oversight: AI systems typically require human oversight and intervention. While AI can process vast amounts of data and perform complex tasks, humans remain in control of the decision-making process, especially in critical and sensitive situations.
Lack of Consciousness: AI lacks self-awareness and consciousness. It does not possess subjective experiences, emotions, or independent thought. As a result, the idea of AI developing a will to control the world is fundamentally implausible.
