Top 5 Security Challenges of LLMs
Before delving into the core subject, allow me to share a brief story from almost 10 years ago.

At the time, I managed Security products at IBM and had a conversation with a senior government client from an Asian country during a large Security conference. Despite being a knowledgeable mechanical engineer, he lacked expertise in software, a common occurrence in those days when individuals were often given portfolios without sufficient functional knowledge.

As the head of Railway Security, his primary focus was on physical and operational security.
I inquired whether a potential scenario involving a hacker compromising your control systems and intentionally altering the railway tracks to cause a collision had been considered. Have measures been implemented to address such a threat?
To make the long story short, he immediately bought Security software.

Now, despite the fascination with the capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs), it\’s crucial not to overlook their security vulnerabilities. Interestingly, most standard security requirements for software remain applicable to LLMs. Here are some key security challenges:

1. Prompt Injection:
Attackers can inject prompts with malicious inputs to make LLMs generate misinformation. Enterprises should implement a robust system to randomly test and validate input prompts. Additionally, measures must be in place to prevent unauthorized access to the system for prompt attacks.

2. Data Poisoning:
During LLM training, ensuring data authenticity is vital. Prioritizing data governance and lineage, along with implementing monitoring, alerting, regular reviews, and audits, helps prevent data poisoning.

3. PII Leakage:
Depending on the prompt, training dataset, and other variables, PII (Personally Identifiable Information) may be exposed in the output, leading to data privacy violations. Test automation proves effective in detecting and mitigating such situations.

4. Denial of Service:
Similar to other software products, LLMs are susceptible to resource-heavy operations and collaborative synchronized attacks. Unusual spikes in workload should be promptly and seriously addressed to prevent denial-of-service attacks.

5.Insecure Output Handling:
Until LLMs reach a high level of maturity, human monitoring of their output is essential. Depending on the use case, human validation could be random or comprehensive. For instance, if LLMs generate code and backend systems trust it, unchecked outputs could lead to significant harm.

How concerned are you about the security of your LLM?
